Shelters are filled with dogs that didn’t live up to owners’ expectations. Properly trained dogs are healthy and happy members of a family. A little bit of time, patience and repetition are all it takes to turn your dog into a more respectful companion.
Give your puppy time to be okay with a crate by taking the training one small step at a time. Once they have grown accustomed to being in the crate with the gate open, try closing the gate and feeding them small treats through the crate. Keep them in the crate for a small duration and slowly increase that duration. If the dog shows signs of distress, you may be progressing too quickly.
Create a calm environment whenever you enter the room the dog is in. Play time is great, but your dog needs to learn to stay calm as his master enters the room. You can retain control over the environment by allowing a few moments before acknowledging your pet. You are behind the decisions to play or interact.
Try a phrase that you will stick with to train your puppy when you are house breaking him or her. When you are outside with the puppy, say the chosen phrase to keep him focused on the task he is to accomplish.
When you approach a strange dog, make sure you approach him slowly and allow the dog to sniff your hand. This will give the dog time learn your scent and possibly trust you. Once a dog recognizes your particular scent, he will be unafraid and willing to obey.
It is not outside the realms of possibilities to be the proud owner of a well-adjusted and perfectly trained dog. Train your pet often, but also shower him with affection, and you can meet his needs. Follow the advice here and it will help your dog become a family member.
