An effective training program translates to a happy pet and an equally happy pet owner. A well mannered dog shows what both of you know and expect from the other. With a dog who has been trained, you can be confident about leaving him at home without supervision, having guests in your home and taking him along with you in public places. Even though training a dog is not an easy task, the time you take with it to teach manners, tricks, and how to do things properly will be time that is well spent.
It is a simple task to teach a dog how to roll over, just be sure to keep some dog treats handy! You can have your dog sit or roll over. Then, use the treat to draw his head from one side to the other. He should follow the treat with his nose, causing him to roll his whole body over. Say “roll over” as he performs the action so that he’ll learn the command. Never become frustrated if it does not happen right away. Once he does learn how, he will be a celebrity among other dogs.
Do not use shock collars and similar training devices. Most of the time these don’t function as they should and can cost quite a bit of money. They aren’t engaging in positive reinforcement either. Generally, techniques such as these actually produce negative results.
Above all, the goal of a training program is to set well-defined expectations for your pet. Your relationship with other people is strengthened by shared respect and mutual understanding; a relationship with your pet is no different. Do not let your dog forget what has been learned. Maintain discipline and watch for any attitude changes. As soon as your dog gets used to training, there’s no end to what you can accomplish.
