When you are going to be training your dog, it is important that you limit the length of the training sessions. Start out training for just a few minutes each day and work up to half an hour or so over time. End the session as soon as your dog’s attention begins to stray.

Dogs only have the ability to focus on one thing at a time. If you do it enough times, your dog will wait for your signals instead of focusing on other things.

Approach an unknown dog slowly and let him smell your outstretched hand. This gives the dog the opportunity to recognize your scent and start to trust you. After the dog becomes familiar with your smell, he’ll start to trust you and listen to you.

Try to get your dog’s attention when you are training him or her. Start your commands by calling out his name. Give a simple command after beginning with the dog’s name. Using your dog’s name lets him know you want his attention.

To keep your dog from biting at furniture or people, or scratching at doors, spray him or her with a bottle of water. This method shows your dog that what they are doing is wrong. As your dog learns the behavior is unwanted, he will begin to avoid doing the bad behavior.

Be aware of special grooming requirements your dog might need. Some dog breeds require little to no grooming, while other breeds require meticulous grooming almost every week. A happy dog is a clean dog, so to train him, he must be groomed.
