You dreamed of bringing home Lassie, but you may have a dog that acts more like Cujo! There is hope! You can train aggressive or naughty behaviors out of your dog.
It is of utmost importance that you reward your dog consistently and correctly while training. Treats, toys and praise have to be given in the right doses and at the correct times. Dogs can get confused if they are rewarded at inappropriate times.
You must stay consistent while you are crate training young puppies. Shortly after you allow your puppy to exit the crate, he must be given the chance to relieve himself in the designated area. As he gets older, he will gain greater control of his bodily functions, making it easier to control himself.
Avoid reinforcing negative behavior. This means that you should never reward your dog, with treats or attention, for doing something you’re trying to train it out of. For instance, avoid rubbing the dog’s head every time they jump up when you get home.
Training Sessions
Your daily schedule should consist of regular potty breaks, regular training sessions and an hour of good exercise. Making sure your dog has enough exercise makes training sessions more effective and encourages regular good behavior from your dog. Your dog will be happier and better behaved if he gets enough exercise.
Train your dog in a positive manner. Rewards include treats, kind words and physical touch. Don’t ever yell at or hit your dog. This doesn’t work well and only succeeds in teaching your dog that its master is out of control. Always be firm, be consistent and use positive reinforcement to make your dog understand what you want from it.
