No matter the size of the dog, they generally all have the same mindset. If you learn how to train one breed of dog, you will have no problem transferring those skills to a different breed. If one does not understand that mindset then they are in luck because they are about to get some insight.
When training your dog, try to avoid reinforcing negative behavior. In basic terms, this means refusing to reward your dog, via attention or treats, for doing any action that you are trying to get them to stop doing. You should not pet your dog when it jumps on you or acknowledge its barking.
Teaching any dog how to roll over can be pretty easy. Make sure you’ve got a few tasty treats handy before beginning. First, place your dog in the “down” position. The next step is to palm the treat and hold your hand beside your dog’s head. Slowly raise the treat over your dog’s head to the opposite side. He should then roll over while following the treat. Be sure to say ROLL OVER as your dog is rolling. Eventually, he will learn to perform the trick upon command. Never become frustrated if it does not happen right away. Once he does learn how, he will be a celebrity among other dogs.
When training your dog, use discretion and regard for your dog’s attention span. Your dog is going to get bored doing the same thing over and over. Training sessions should be limited to about 10 minutes of time or less.
Training a dog is a lot easier if the trainer can work from a solid understanding of canine behavior. When you know and understand this principle, you will be more successful in your efforts. People who know how dogs usually behave can train them better.
